What to do in Kaliningrad?
To visit the tomb of kant - To go to the seaside - To pat the cat
On the Isle of Kant (the former Kneiphof) lived and enjoyed lonely walks the philosopher Immanuil Kant. He was so punctual that people used to check time and set the clock up to him. There he was buried after his death in 1804. As a rule no tourist would miss the opportunity to go and see his tomb. We also recommend the bronze monument to the philosopher in front of the old University building, located near the Isle. You won't notice any pathetic pomposity or arrogance in it, as well as the great philosopher himself never possessed such features. The monument was set by the initiative of the Countess Mar Besides, on the Isle there is a 14th century cathedral. Now it houses museums and a concert hall. Formerly coronations were held there. Nowadays, under the vaults of the cathedral celebrated musicians like Vladimir Spivakov and Valery Gergiev play classical music.
The Baltic Sea is cold and severe. Yet, if you try to love its wild nature, it will turn tender and generous for you. To plunge into the atmosphere of beaumonde you may in Svetlogorsk (the former Raushene) where sitting by a fire-place in the restaurant listening to gentle piano tunes you may meditate over the sea-view opening from the window. To taste the salty wind on the vast expanses of the Baltic, to get amazed by the splendor of the magnificent dunes, to wander under century-old pine-trees, you may on the Kurshskaya Spit. Take care and dress warm enough. Regardless of your loving attitude to the sea, on the shore it's always damp and chilling.
Kaliningrad is a guests-friendly place. The first proof of this statement is that city gates are always wide-open. In general, there are eight gates (if we consider historical monuments only). The Friedland Gates house = museum; among its exhibits are a monument to the Great Master of the German Order ana a collection of weapons. In the Brandenburg Gates there is an art gallery. And in the Royal Gates, renovated for the 750th anniversary of the city, the symbolic keys to the city are kept. It's only there that you can pat the famous Prussian cat who is considered the Keeper of the Keys.
